Headliners & main lineup

Rock am Ring 2009 did not just sell tickets – it sold an experience. Around 20,000 tickets went before a single band was announced, which shows how strong the festival’s reputation had become by its 25th year. Once the lineup dropped, fans were treated to a mix of nu-metal, indie, punk and alternative acts from all over the world.

And that list was only the start. Fans could move from Bring Me the Horizon and Trivium to Phoenix, White Lies or The Kooks in the space of an evening. With more than 80 bands on the bill, Rock am Ring 2009 delivered a genuinely stacked weekend.

The stages: where the big moments happened

As usual, the festival ran across three main stages, each with its own character. The first wave of headliners included Las Vegas giants The Killers, who were riding high on a run of hit albums. They were joined by Placebo and Slipknot, both of whom brought huge production and loyal fan bases to the Nürburgring.

Confirmed main-stage headliners
The Killers, Placebo, Slipknot

Among the early confirmed acts were Canadian punk favourites Billy Talent, Swedish indie heroes Mando Diao and festival regulars The Subways. In addition, an exclusive appearance by Killswitch Engage added even more weight to an already heavy lineup.

German acts & local favourites

Although Rock am Ring has a global pull, 2009 also showed off the strength of the German rock and hip-hop scene. The bill blended international names with home-grown acts, giving the weekend a real mix of styles and languages.

Featured German artists
Peter Fox, Jan Delay & Disko No. 1, Kettcar, Polarkreis 18 and more

Acts such as Peter Fox and Jan Delay & Disko No. 1 helped keep the German flavour front and centre, while bands like Volbeat and Guano Apes added even more regional variety. Consequently, the 2009 edition felt both international and distinctly European.

Tickets, crowd and the 2009 legacy

In 2008 the festival sold out in advance, with around 150,000 people across Rock am Ring and Rock im Park. Therefore, by 2009 many fans knew they had to move quickly if they wanted to be on the grid for another huge year.

Rock am Ring 2009 is still remembered as a classic edition: a packed lineup, three busy stages and a mix of heavy bands, indie favourites and big-room headliners. For many fans, it was the perfect excuse to start travelling to Germany every June.

  1. It seemed like James was back in his original metallica fashion at the 2008 Rock Am Ring and with the release of their new album the possiblities are high.
