What is Rock am Ring?
It might be Glastonbury in the UK or Coachella in the US, but in Germany the number one festival for rock fans is Rock am Ring. First held in 1985 to celebrate the opening of the Nürburgring’s newer track layout, it has grown into one of Europe’s most revered rock festivals, regularly attracting around 90,000 fans each year.
Over the decades, some of the biggest names in music have played the famous race track venue. The inaugural 1985 edition was headlined by U2. David Bowie performed in 1987 alongside UB40 and Eurythmics. In the early 1990s, acts like Marillion, Bryan Adams, Elton John and Pearl Jam appeared, before the festival moved towards a heavier rock and metal focus.
Since then, Rock am Ring has hosted legends including Aerosmith, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Rammstein, Ozzy Osbourne, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Die Toten Hosen, Guns N’ Roses, Marilyn Manson, Evanescence and Kiss. Recent years have seen modern headliners such as Green Day, Muse and Volbeat join that list.
- Three days of live music across multiple stages
- Around 80,000–90,000 visitors each year
- Iconic Nürburgring race circuit setting in the Eifel region
Rock am Ring also has a sister event, Rock im Park, which takes place on the same weekend at the Zeppelinfeld in Nuremberg. Most bands play one day at Rock am Ring and then the next day at Rock im Park, or vice versa.
